Determining cosmic microwave background anisotropies in the presence of foregrounds

چکیده

Separating foregrounds from the signal is one of the big challenges in cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. A simple way to estimate the CMB temperature in a given pixel is to fit for the amplitudes of the CMB and the various foreground components. The variance squared of this estimator is shown to be equal to [(FDF) σ (0) θ + σ 2 shape], where σ (0) θ is the variance in the absence of foregrounds; σshape is the variance due to the uncertainty in the shapes of the foreground components; and FDF is the foreground degradation factor. This one number, the FDF, gives a good indication of the ability of a given experiment to disentangle the CMB from foreground sources. A variety of applications relating to the planning and analyzing of experiments is presented.

On Planck simulations: towards \2-nd order" analyses

We simulate Planck observations by adopting a detailed model of the microwave sky including monopole, dipole, anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We estimate the impact of main beam optical aberrations on CMB anisotropy measurements in presence of extragalactic source fluctuations and we discuss the main implications for the Planck t...

Cosmic Covariance and the Low Quadrupole Anisotropy of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (wmap) Data

The quadrupole power of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies seen in the WMAP data is puzzlingly low. In this paper we demonstrate that Minimum Variance Optimization (MVO), a technique used by many authors (including the WMAP science team) to separate the CMB from contaminating foregrounds, has the effect of forcing the extracted CMB map to have zero statistical correlatio...

Extragalactic Foregrounds of the Cosmic Microwave Background: Prospects for the MAP Mission

While the major contribution to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies are the sought-after primordial fluctuations produced at the surface of last scattering, other effects produce secondary fluctuations at lower redshifts. Here, we study the extragalactic foregrounds of the CMB in the context of the upcoming MAP mission. We first survey the major extragalactic foregrounds and show...

Cosmic Confusion: Degeneracies among Cosmological Parameters Derived from Measurements of Microwave Background Anisotropies

In the near future, observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies will provide accurate determinations of many fundamental cosmological parameters. In this paper, we analyse degeneracies among cosmological parameters to illustrate some of the limitations inherent in CMB parameter estimation. For simplicity, throughout our analysis we assume a cold dark matter universe with ...

Polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

The CMB radiation is completely characterized by its temperature anisotropy and polarization in each direction in the sky. Today, studies of the temperature anisotropies in the CMB have provided strong constraints on many of the cosmological parameters. However, for precision cosmology we still need to consider the polarization information of the CMB to break some of the degenerecies that exist...
